Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Custom: Choosing a Platform for an RUO Peptide Store
An honest 2026 platform decision guide for research peptide stores: Shopify, WooCommerce and owned custom builds compared across eight practical criteria.
Read the guideWe design and build your research-use-only store on our own production platform. The storefront, lot records, checkout and admin belong to the same system. We configure the build around your catalog and team, then deploy it into your accounts. Here is what is built in, what needs scoping and what you own.
The storefront has 34 page types, a native blog with RSS, mega menus, typo-tolerant search and specification filters. Researchers can browse a collection, compare product details and reach the relevant lot documentation without a separate certificate service.
Your team edits pages visually using 43 page-builder sections and 8 template blocks. Drag and drop sections, preview desktop, tablet or phone layouts, undo changes and save drafts. Share-preview links let you review unpublished work. Six palettes and theme tokens give each brand a different presentation without changing the platform.

Each variant can have its own lots, with purity, testing details, labeled versus measured amount and a COA PDF. Product pages list past batches. A public lot-number lookup connects the certificate to the lot on the vial; private records stay hidden.
How lot lookup works →The copy checker runs across storefront content, emails and AI-agent edits. Choose off, warn or block mode. Research-use attestation and minimum age are stored on each order. Access modes, country and US-state restrictions and configurable disclaimers support your policies. These controls do not replace legal review. Not legal advice.
How the copy checker works →One-page checkout includes Stripe Payment Element and manual bank transfer, Zelle or crypto payments, marked paid by staff. An approved high-risk processor connects through the provider interface, scoped per build. Processor approval remains the provider's decision.
Taxes can use manual rules, Stripe Tax or TaxJar with fallback. Shipping zones, ShipStation, a 3PL connector and tracking links support fulfilment. Draft orders and invoices support orders your team starts in the admin.

Subscriptions, buy now pay later, live carrier rates, and native NMI, Authorize.net, ACH or crypto gateways are not built in. We scope any required integration against your approved provider rather than assume a payment method is available.
The admin has 80+ screens covering daily operations and oversight. Staff work in the same system that publishes the storefront.
Discounts, cart drawer offers, volume pricing, gift cards, store credit, loyalty, referrals and reviews are built in. Abandoned-checkout and back-in-stock emails use Resend or Gmail sending. Connect Klaviyo or Omnisend. Server-side tracking supports Meta CAPI, GA4, TikTok, Snap, Pinterest and Google Ads enhanced conversions. These tools do not guarantee sales or permit restricted ads.
Metadata templates, JSON-LD, an image sitemap, robots controls and llms.txt support publishing. The admin includes bulk SEO editing, an SEO score, Search Console, automatic redirects and a 404 monitor. IndexNow and AI crawler controls are available. Rankings still depend on your market, content and other factors.

A built-in MCP server offers 79 role-bound tools. Assistants can work on catalog, pages and SEO with drafts first, confirmations and an audit trail. It is off by default. Agents never touch payments, refunds, staff or API keys.
How AI operations work →The delivered commerce platform uses Next.js 16, React 19, Turso and Vercel. Pages are prerendered and cached; admin edits refresh pages by cache tag without a redeploy. Quality checks include 1,700+ unit tests, Playwright end-to-end tests and an axe accessibility sweep.
Our demo store measured 100 for mobile Lighthouse SEO, Accessibility and Best Practices. These are demo-store measurements, not a score promised for every client site.
We also build for CBD and hemp, kratom, and nootropics and supplements. The same platform supports batch evidence, access controls and your approved processor. You decide with your counsel what you sell and where; we block the states you choose. The research-use copy rules are not configurable per store, so we choose warn or block mode with you and explain that normal category wording can be flagged.
