Shopify vs WooCommerce vs Custom: Choosing a Platform for an RUO Peptide Store
An honest 2026 platform decision guide for research peptide stores: Shopify, WooCommerce and owned custom builds compared across eight practical criteria.
Read the guideShopify is a strong commerce platform with a large app ecosystem. It is not automatically the wrong choice for every brand. Research-use-only peptide stores have specific questions to settle, though: payment eligibility, lot documentation, access controls and ownership. We offer an owned build for brands that want those tools in the platform rather than a collection of separate apps.
Shopify Payments eligibility rules restrict this category. Read the current policy for your business before deciding that a working storefront means its payment provider will accept your products. Platform access and payment approval are different decisions.
Our build includes Stripe Payment Element and manual payments, with a provider interface for an approved high-risk processor. We scope that connection against your provider's published policy. We do not guarantee approval, and changing platforms does not remove a processor's restrictions. Manual bank transfer, Zelle or crypto payments are marked paid by your team; a native crypto gateway is not built in.
Read Shopify Payments eligibility ↗Lot-level COAs, age gates and research-use attestation usually need apps on Shopify. That can be a reasonable approach if the apps fit your requirements and your team is comfortable managing them. Check how the full workflow behaves, not just whether a feature appears in an app listing.
Our platform stores lots per variant, publishes certificates and supports public lot lookup. The copy checker also runs on products, pages, emails and AI-agent edits. Attestation and minimum age are stored on each order. These built-in controls support your research-use policies but are not legal advice.

The comparison below uses the same categories as our homepage. Shopify capabilities may depend on your plan, apps and payment provider. For our build, processor connections are scoped separately, and no platform feature guarantees revenue, rankings or approval.
Ownership is also a trade-off. With Shopify you rent the platform. With our build you own the code and database in your accounts, and pay hosting providers directly. That shifts responsibility for the deployed store rather than making every operating cost disappear.

| You own the code and database | Yours | Rented |
| Monthly platform fees to us | None | Subscription + app fees |
| Server-side conversion tracking | Built in | Via apps |
| Manage with AI agents (MCP) | 79 tools | Partial |
The Growth build includes Shopify migration and 301 redirects. Products move through CSV import. Reviews can move through the Judge.me or Shopify review import. We map redirects from your old URLs so the migration includes the paths people already use to reach the store.
This is different from the platform's WooCommerce importer. For Shopify we scope the catalog export, review source and old URL mapping on the call. We do not assume that every app's data or custom behavior transfers automatically. The useful starting material is your current product export and the URLs that need to keep working.

If your products are not restricted, you want a large app ecosystem and you prefer a monthly plan to a one-time build, Shopify may be the better fit. A hosted platform can be a sensible choice when its standard workflows match the business and you value its surrounding services.
An owned build is worth comparing when lot documentation, research-use checks and staff operations are central to your store. You should still compare the maintenance responsibility, hosting costs and optional support. We would rather identify the trade-offs on the call than suggest ownership alone makes the decision.
Look at checkout, batch evidence, copy review and admin workflows together. A screenshot can show a layout; it cannot settle provider eligibility or prove that your migration scope is complete. Our live demo stores use sample data and nothing is for sale.
The platform overview lists built-in payments, exclusions, shipping, growth and SEO tools. The compliance page explains the copy checker and access controls. Use those details to form a build scope, then confirm current terms for your business. Capabilities and policies change.
